  • Processing time is about 3 – 4 weeks for all passport book types; passport cards take longer.
  • All applicants are required to use the Passport Wizard to complete their application.  Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
  • You must submit the original document + 1 photocopy (single-sided) for all required documents. Original documents will be returned to you after reviewing your application.

If you can answer YES to the following criteria, you are eligible to renew your adult passport by mail:

  1. I can submit my most recent U.S. passport book by mail with my renewal application.
  2. I was at least 16 years old when my most recent U.S. passport book was issued.
  3. I was issued my most recent U.S. passport book less than 15 years ago.
  4. My most recent U.S. passport book has a validity of 10 years from issuance to expiration.
  5. The U.S. passport book that I am renewing has not been mutilated, damaged, lost or stolen.
  6. My most recent U.S. passport book was issued in my current name (or I can document my name change by submitting a relevant marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order with my passport application.)
  7. I currently reside in and/or have a valid mailing address in Saudi Arabia.
  8. I am only applying for a passport book (I am not applying for a passport card).
  9. I can be without my U.S. passport for 3-4 weeks. While the passport application is undergoing processing, the Department of State will have your passport.

  1. Your current or expired U.S. Passport book. (no exceptions)
  2. Form DS-82 passport application, completed (in English), signed & dated
  • You are required to use the Passport Wizard to complete your application. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
  • Social Security numbers (SSN) are required on all passport applications (Box No. 5 on DS-82 application). If you have never been issued a Social Security number, you MUST submit a signed and dated “Declaration of No Social Security Number” in addition to your application.
  1. One recent (less than 6 months old) passport sized (5cm x 5cm) photograph. See our photo requirements here.
  2. Payment: Either proof of Payment via S. government’s secure online payment site, Pay.gov (made in USD) or cashier’s check in Saudi Riyals.

Pay the $130 passport book application fee via the U.S. government’s secure payment site, Pay.gov. After successfully paying the fee, you must print out the electronic payment confirmation you receive via email and include it in the package you submit. Note: Online fee payment is currently available for passport book renewals onlyYou cannot pay for a Passport Card via secure electronic payment. 

Cashier’s check in Saudi Riyals
We accept cashier’s checks issued by any bank in Saudi Arabia. Checks must be issued in Saudi Riyals and must be made payable to the “U.S. Disbursing Officer, Symbol 8768.” If you wish to pay by U.S. postal money order, you do not have to make an online payment.  Please include the U.S. postal money order with your application when you mail it in.

Passport Mail Back Services via SMSA

Once your renewed U.S. passport arrives at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate General at which you applied, it will be mailed back to you via SMSA.  To ensure successful mail back service, provide current and accurate mailing address, mobile number, and email address on your Adult Passport Renewal application (DS-82).

The processing time for a new passport is generally 3-4 weeks, after which delivery of the new passport will take 24 hours within the geographic areas of Riyadh, Jeddah, Dhahran, Hail, and Qassim. Passport deliveries in all other geographic areas of Saudi Arabia will take 48-72 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about passport renewal by mail:

Question: Who is eligible to renew their passport by mail?

Answer: You may be eligible to apply via online payment if you are an adult (16 years and older), who already has a 10-year U.S. passport book issued no more than 15 years ago. You also must have a mailing address in Saudi Arabia.

Question: Can minors (younger than 16 years) renew by mail?

Answer: No. Mail-in renewal is only available for adults (16 and older). Children under age 16 cannot apply for a passport by themselves.

Question: What if I don’t have a passport book because it was lost or stolen? Can I still mail my application in?

Answer: No. You will need to apply for a new passport in-person at the U.S. Embassy or a consulate.

Question: How long will it take to receive my passport in the mail?

Answer: Mail-in passport renewals take 3-4 weeks, the Department’s current processing time for routine service. If you have a need for immediate international travel, we may be able to issue you a limited validity emergency passport that will be valid for one year. Please make an appointment and come to the Embassy or nearest consulate in person. We are unable to process requests for expedited service through the online payment process via Pay.gov.

  • Follow instructions to complete your “DS-82 U.S. Passport Renewal Application – Fee Payment Form” via U.S. Bank account (ACH), credit or debit card, Amazon account, or PayPal account.
  • After successfully paying the $130 USD fee, you must print out the electronic payment confirmation you receive via email and include it in the package you submit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about secure online payment via Pay.gov:

Question: Who is eligible to pay online and renew their passport by mail?

Answer: You may be eligible to apply via online payment if you are an adult (16 years and older), who already has a 10-year U.S. passport book issued no more than 15 years ago. You also must have a mailing address in Saudi Arabia.

Question: What payment methods are available for use via Pay.gov?

Answer: You can pay the $130 fee by electronic check/transfer (ACH), credit/debit card, PayPal, or Amazon Pay on Pay.gov. This amount cannot be altered. You must pay the fee in U.S. dollars.

Question: Do I need special software or computer equipment to pay for my U.S. passport via Pay.gov?

Answer: No. All you need is a computer or mobile device with Internet access and a browser.

Question: How do I know that my payment information is secure?

Answer: Pay.gov is a secure portal used by more than 40 U.S. government agencies to collect forms and payments. Pay.gov uses 128-bit SSL encryption to protect your transaction.

Question: What if I want to pay in-person?

Answer: Payments made in-person are still accepted. To avail this option, you must make an appointment for renewal in-person at your nearest Embassy or Consulate:

Passports for children under the age of 16 require the child AND both parents to be present for the appointment.  If only one parent is able to come to the Embassy or Consulate, the parent who is not present MUST submit a notarized form DS-3053, granting consent for the child’s passport application.

Age Progression Photos: If you/your child was issued a passport as a newborn (i.e. under 12 months of age), we may ask to see additional photos that cover that period and help connect the you/ your child with the passport photo taken as an infant.  Please bring printed copies of photos with you to your appointment.  You will not be allowed to bring cell phones with you into the Embassy or Consulate.

If you are an adult (over 16 years old) applying for your first U.S. passport, or an adult (over 16 years old) renewing your passport for the first time since you turned 16, you must appear in-person at an Embassy or Consulate.

Evidence of presence in the U.S.: First time adult applicants with a U.S. birth certificate may be requested to provide evidence of their mother’s presence in the United States at the time of their birth. This might include; hospital records, parents’ school transcripts or employment records, old passports/visas, or other secondary evidence of citizenship.
  4. Age Progression Photos: If your last passport was issued more than ten years ago or when you were a small child or newborn (i.e. under 12 months of age), your appearance has changed a lot in the last several years. We may ask to see additional photos that cover that period and help connect you today with the younger person in the passport photo.  Please bring printed copies of photos with you to your appointment.  You will not be allowed to bring cell phones with you into the Embassy or Consulate.

Take advantage of fast and convenient passport delivery services via SMSA!  If you are applying in-person at our U.S. Embassy or Consulates General, you must request mail back service and complete a contact form at the time of your interview.  If you are applying to Renew an Adult Passport by mail (DS-82), this service is automatic.

Once your renewed U.S. passport is available, you will be notified via an automatic email and be contacted by a SMSA representative via phone.  To ensure successful mail back service, provide a current and accurate mailing address, mobile number, and email address on your passport application.
