Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars and Secondary Educators (SUSI Scholars)

The U.S. Mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is now accepting applications for the Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) Program for Secondary School Educators.  The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m. KSA time, December 25, 2023.  Please note this is a highly competitive program. Participation will be limited to three groups, each consisting of 20 mid-level secondary school teachers selected from around the world.  Two of the groups will be geared to teachers and will focus on content and materials about the United States, NOT on teaching methods and pedagogy.  The third group will be geared to experienced administrators, including teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, Ministry of Education officials, and others.

Who is eligible to apply to the SUSI Program for Secondary School Educators?

To be eligible for this program you must:

  • be a mid-career secondary-school teacher, administrator, teacher trainer, curriculum developer, or textbook writer.
  • be a Saudi citizen resident in Saudi Arabia.
  • be 30-50 years old.
  • be highly proficient in English.
  • have limited experience in the U.S.
  • obtain written permission from your employer to attend the entire five-week program.

What is the goal of this program?

The program is intended for secondary-school educators who seek to introduce American studies into their curricula, develop courses about the United States, or offer specialized workshops or seminars about the United States. Participants will get content and materials to help them develop high school courses about the United States.  The theme of this year’s program is “Liberty, Equality, and the American Dream.”

Where will the program take place?

Participants will be assigned to one of three locations.  Each institution will address the same theme, “Liberty, Equality, and the American Dream,” but will explore the theme through a different lens, taking advantage of the specific resources and culture at each location.

  • The program for teachers hosted by the Institute for Training and Development (ITD) in Amherst, Massachusetts, will examine individual rights and social obligations.
  • The program for teachers hosted by the Institute for Teachers at the University of Montana will explore democracy and active citizenship.
  • The program for administrators hosted by the Institute for Administrators at California State University, Chico will explore access and equity in U.S. education and society.

Participants will spend four weeks on campus engaging in lectures, panels, seminar discussions, readings, workshops, site visits, meetings with practitioners in the field, and cultural activities.  All participants will also engage in a one-week study tour to a different region of the United States. The program will conclude in Washington, D.C.

When is the program?

The five-week program is scheduled to take place in the Summer of 2024.

What is the application process?

Applicants should submit their CVs in English to ExchangeProgramsSaudiArabia@state.gov no later than 11:59 p.m. KSA time on December 25, 2023.  Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview in English and will be requested to submit a one-page statement of interest in English.
